LADIES

Helen considered storming the town hall to grill the politicians who were her suspects, but that kind of direct confrontation hardly ever uncovered useful information. And she'd probably have to promise to support their favorite local charities, just to get them to talk to her. While she wouldn't mind writing checks, they'd probably also expect a time commitment from her like working on their campaigns or attending their events. And she was, contrary to what she'd originally feared when forced into early retirement by her lupus, already busy enough with volunteer activities that she wasn't looking for any new ones, least of all ones she hadn't chosen for herself. She'd spent most of her marriage engaged in charitable activities that other people had chosen for her.

She could avoid getting dragged back into politics by enlisting Tate to question the suspects at town hall. He might even get them to open up more than they would with her—he could be charming when he chose to be, even if he preferred to be more bluntly honest with her—and she trusted his judgment implicitly. But if she asked for his help, she'd have to confess that she was involved in another investigation, and then he would worry about her even though she was perfectly safe.

No, she had to question the suspects herself. Just not at the town hall, which wasn't a place she normally frequented. Someone would notice her there, wonder about it, and it would get back to Tate, and he'd worry even more if he heard about the investigation from someone other than herself.

Fortunately, she could question her latest suspects at the nursing home, where no one would be the least bit surprised by her presence. They were almost guaranteed to make an appearance at the nursing home at least once more before Christmas for photo opps. So before leaving for the day, she enlisted Betty, Josie, and Martha to keep an eye out for the selectmen Helen wanted to question. They agreed to let her know if they showed up and even to keep them onsite until she could arrive to interrogate them.

It took three days for a good opportunity to arise, but eventually Betty texted to say that the three female suspects had arrived together. A second text read, Hurry. Josie is stalling them, and it's not going well.

Helen's driver, exhibiting his usual prescience, had arrived in front of the cottage just then, and he'd dropped her off at the nursing home less than fifteen minutes later.

None too soon either. Josie had boxed in the three selectwomen, along with the reporter, Geoff Loring, at the far end of the activity room. They were backed up against the holiday tree, which was looking more and more like a pile of scrap metal as each progressively larger ornament was added. The most recent one presumably represented nine ladies dancing, although, from across the room, it just looked like nine indistinct lumps.

Josie had enlisted several other residents to block her prey from leaving.
